Forthcoming Bordeaux Dinner

August 03, 2011

Here at Connolly's we are very pleased to be helping to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Chateau d'Angludet in Bordeaux. To mark this momentous year we shall be holding a dinner at Carters of Moseley on the 27th September, hosted by Leigh Claridge of Maison Sichel, to showcase the fantastic wines produced by this estate.

Chateau d'Angludet in Margaux has been the seat of the Sichel family since they purchased the property in 1961 and set about rejuvanating the neglected vineyards. These vineyards overlook the Gironde Estuary from a broad plateau about 3km away. Currently 32 of the 81 hectares that comprise the vineyard are under vine and the ratio of plantings is approximately 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.
Current winemaker, Benjamin Sichel, believes in a natural approach to viticulture, fostering the right conditions to allow the vines to regulate themselves. At Chateau d'Angludet this involves strict pruning during the winter, managed grass cover, leaf-thinning and green harvesting. The poor soils, made up of gravel deposits, aid the development of tannin, which contributes to the ageing potential of the wine.

The result of all these factors are beautiful elegant, aromatic wines which we hope you will come and enjoy sampling with us.

Details and prices are currently be finalised for the evening, with tickets going on sale within the next couple of weeks. We will let you know of any developments via our newsletter and website. We hope you can join us for this celebration of beautiful Margaux wine coupled with fantastic food from Brad at Carters and enlivened by the enlightening conversation of Leigh from Maison Sichel.

You really should have been there………………

There are tastings and then there are tastings and last month we served up the most phenomenal Italian Masterclass in the company of Michael Palij, Master of Wine, who steered us through some of his most recent discoveries (notably a Sardinian quartet which provided all the evidence you need of the revolution taking place in the island’s vineyards and cellars).

The Half Bottle – it’s a thing of beauty
The Half Bottle – it’s a thing of beauty

March 14, 2023

Years ago, before very clever folk started coming up with all manner of means to keep open bottles of wine (reasonably) fresh, half bottles of wine were a thing. Growers would routinely bottle a modest proportion of their harvest into half bottles and restaurants in particular, would carry them, largely for the benefit of solo diners
