The palate has a smooth, elegant sort of fruitiness, with a hint of grippy spiciness backing up the red cherry fruits, as well as a trace of undergrowthy complexity. A light, attractive Pinot of real character.
Fascinating white Rioja made from a grape variety that sprang into existence from a single mutated cane of red Tempranillo discovered in 1988. Don't let the word ‘mutated’ put you off - the grape vines tendency to mutate is one of the reasons we have such an incredible array of grape varieties to choose from.
Sweet greengage and brighter citrus notes are to the fore but there's peach and richer tropical flavours lurking in the background to. Light oak ageing has given the wine a creamy edge and a very delicate spice character, without being overtly oaky.Bodegas Manzanos

"I should have to admit approaching our meeting with Arendsig with a degree of scepticism as Robertson still struggles to command the respect afforded to Stellenbosch and Hermanus but my doubts proved to be totally unfounded as these were some of the most exciting wines that we tasted during our visit. Lourens Van Der Westhuizen’s winery may lack the grandeur and, let’s be honest, size of some of his peers to the west but this is a property that just screams ‘authenticity’. We had been fortunate to visit some stunningly beautiful wineries over the previous 10 days, many with stylish restaurants and showpiece cellars but this is the reality of winemaking for so many – battling against shortage of space and ferments that won’t do as they’re told, to create wines of unbelievable class.
All the wines are very site specific with the block no. stated on the label together with the (frequently tiny) number of bottles produced. Neutral vessels are used for maturation such that the character of the vineyard is allowed to shine through and only natural yeasts are used for the fermentation. Elegance and balance are the keywords here, together with length; these are wines that just beg to be drunk.
The Cabernet is delicious, in a juicy style. Fermented in 5,000 ltr foudres and 4-5 year old smaller formats this is scarcely touched by oak but has a fine, underlying richness and depth. Lovely red fruit core and great backbone." Chris Connolly
The Wiener Trilogie 2015 is a blend comprised of 65% Zweigelt, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, with the grape varieties harvested at different times. Zweigelt was harvested first, from mid- to late September; and the last to be harvested was Cabernet, toward the end of October. After each of the wine varieties underwent their own fermentation and subsequent malolactic fermentation - in large wooden casks or steel tanks – the individual wines were racked into barriques. Depending on the structure of the wine, more or less around 20% of the wood used for the Trilogie is new. In our 16th century cellar, the wine matured in the barriques for around 20 months – these were repeatedly moved, and then, gradually, the final cuve´e was put together.
This wine reveals intense red berry aromas accompanied by delicate scents of Zweigelt spice and a touch of moss and wet leaves. One the palate are juicy, spicy cherry fruit tones with playful yet gentle tannins. The Wiener Trilogie is not a thick, fat new world wine – it delivers mouthfuls of drinking pleasure with lots of finesse, and makes an ideal food companion.
On the nose there is the nectar of field flowers such as camomile, elderflower, iris. Mineral on the palate with a finish of almond, typical of classic Garganega.
Il Gruccione (The Bee-eater) is possibly the wine that best represents the essence of Nunzio Ghiraldi's wines and of their interpretaion of Lugana, starting from the interaction between the local terroir and the Turbiana grape varietal.
