The Hunter Valley gets all the attention when it comes to Australian Semillon but every now and again a little gem such as this crosses our path and reminds us that other Australian regions are also putting out truly world class Semillon. This is very definitely a case of blink or you'll miss it. Made in tiny quantities, it's already sold out in its native Australia so grab some while you can.
Flaxman's Semillon is dry grown and handpicked from a 1/2 acre (0.2 hectares for the metrically-minded) block planted in 1929. This wine is a wonderful example of how elegant and beautifully floral semillon can be. Drinking beautifully now, but will age beautifully also.

Immediate nose of beetroot juice poured over graphite shavings sets you up for quite a journey. The palate shares the same dense minerality and graphite texture as the nose with a quiet but growing presence of forest floor and frozen berries. On opening, this fruit thaws to release fresh summer pudding and cream served in a pencil case. Bonkers!

Larry Cherubino began his winemaking career with Houghton winery but by 2004 he and his wife Edwina were already preparing to go solo having acquired a small plot in Frankland River. They released their first wine in 2005 and have gone on to receive worldwide acclaim including Winery of the year from James Halliday, Matt Skinner and, most recently Matthew Jukes. Matthew’s “100 Best Australian Wines” has become something of an industry bible so the inclusion of 11 of Larry’s wines amongst the top 100 is no small accolade. Needless to say, this bright, full flavoured and slightly earthy Pinot is amongst the top 100 – it’s only made in the best years and we are really thrilled to include it here.
Aromas of beetroot and earth with black cherry, red flowers and oak delivered spices. The tannins are fine and soft with a fine acidity.
