Vat 9 is a blend of the best of Tyrell's old blocks that sit on the strip of red soil that runs through the winery.
The 2018 vintage, one of the earliest Shiraz harvests seen, was simply spectacular for Shiraz in the Hunter Valley. Warm, dry conditions kept cropping levels down, producing wines of great concentration and length of flavour. Intense purple in colour, the wine displays a pretty, red-berry nose with hints of subtle oak and lifted spice. The medium-bodied palate shows soft, sweet fruits and more of that subtle oak, all complemented by a fine, clean acid structure and long tannins. This is a classic Vat 9 that is destined to have a long life in the cellar.

Immediate nose of beetroot juice poured over graphite shavings sets you up for quite a journey. The palate shares the same dense minerality and graphite texture as the nose with a quiet but growing presence of forest floor and frozen berries. On opening, this fruit thaws to release fresh summer pudding and cream served in a pencil case. Bonkers!

Larry Cherubino began his winemaking career with Houghton winery but by 2004 he and his wife Edwina were already preparing to go solo having acquired a small plot in Frankland River. They released their first wine in 2005 and have gone on to receive worldwide acclaim including Winery of the year from James Halliday, Matt Skinner and, most recently Matthew Jukes. Matthew’s “100 Best Australian Wines” has become something of an industry bible so the inclusion of 11 of Larry’s wines amongst the top 100 is no small accolade. Needless to say, this bright, full flavoured and slightly earthy Pinot is amongst the top 100 – it’s only made in the best years and we are really thrilled to include it here.
Aromas of beetroot and earth with black cherry, red flowers and oak delivered spices. The tannins are fine and soft with a fine acidity.
