Bodegas Belote was created in 2012 by Alberto Viejo who recognised the provenance of the region and the opportunity to bring back to life a small cellar that first made wine in 1947. The cellar is a cave hewn by pick and shovel and the ideal environment for the making of these expressive wines. The winery could be easily missed in the sleepy village of Roales de Campos directly south of Leon.
The 2.5 hectares of vineyards are located in the Mayorga de Campos in the south east of the Tierra de Leon denominated area, at an altitude of 900m. The soil type is clay and loam. The variety is Prieto Picudo, fifteen year old vines, and is likened to Alfrocheiro in Portugal. The wines are spontaneously fermented in cement and then aged in French oak. Although not certified, organic practise is employed. Alberto and Emilio are committed to the use of traditional methods and protection of their heritage. These wines reflect their origin and passion for the land.
The Belote is the mound under which are the ’caves’ or cellars. Wine has been traditionally made in these caves for many years.
The Belote undergoes spontaneous fermentation and then enjoys 12 months aging in French barrique. This is a wine of serious intensity with masses of dark fruit but skillfully avoids being brooding or overpowered. One to lay down and enjoy over the next decade.
A celebration of Mendoza - the colour, culture and flavour and a celebration of friendship. A really pure expression of Malbec, bright red & juicy, rich chocolate flavours with a lick of oak to round out the edges. Muy, muy fantasticó – richly bloody, vibrant, Latin and velveteen.
Classic Provence rosé, expressive and aromatic, blending fresh cherries and floral notes alongside more exotic fruits then finishing with a soft round palate packed with peach and raspberry.
One of my favourite white discoveries of last year; crisp, fresh and elegant with classic varietal character and a mouthwatering finish. - Chris Connolly
Sileni's state of the art winery, vinifies grapes using modern and traditional methods which help to produce a dry, refreshing, all round well structured wine. Pale lemony green in colour with a satisfying nose of kiwi, lime, gooseberry, tropical fruits and a touch of grassiness. Whilst the palate displays taut acidity, zingly citrus fruits, gooseberry, stone fruits and minerality.
