Portugal presents a bit of a paradox to the UK wine drinker being only remembered for Port Madeira and the horror of Mateus Rose. This situation is not helped that with a history of wine production dated back to pre-history Portugal has as many distinct native varietals and styles of wine as Italy and France and on top of that refuses to use the same varietal name as the more familiar names from Spain.
Having said that Portugal produces some simply stunning wines at amazing value a fact drummed into Chris when he visited at the end of the year.
Join us in Livery St to try wines from areas you don't recognise made of grapes you can't pronounce but don't worry they're all lovely...

Simpson's Restaurant Edgbaston
A last minute opportunity has arisen for Connolly's to host a winemaker dinner with Arnauld Bourgeois from the Henri Bourgeois Estate at Simpson's Restaurant in Edgbaston.
The dinner will be held in Simpson's Private dining room and therefore we have only 17 tickets to sell. The Dinner will include six wines and three courses chosen specifically to match the wines of Bourgeois followed by coffee and petit fours.
Petit Bourgeois Sauvignon Blanc on Arrival
Sancerre Les Baronnes & Pouilly Fume served with a Goats cheese and Beetroot starter.
St Nicolas Bourgueil Les Rouilleres & Sancerre Les Baronnes Rouge served with a Rabbit based main course.
Sancerre Rose Les Baronness served with a Rasberry dessert.
Coffee & Petit Fours.
The flights to and from Italy are booked . . . I have no idea what we shall be tasting on the 24th but they will be Italian and they will be brand new to Connolly's.
In a few short years Australian wine has gone from being flavour of the month to yesterday's new. Hampered by a disadvantageous exchange rate and one or two less successful vintages many wine drinkers have moved on to other things. Consequently we have spent weeks in the tasting room working our palates to the bone looking for all manner of new Aussie treasures - join Mark as he talks you through some of our latest discoveries.
