The Rioja Case
1 bottles each of:
Fascinating white Rioja made from a grape variety that sprang into existence from a single mutated cane of red Tempranillo discovered in 1988. Don't let the word ‘mutated’ put you off - the grape vines tendency to mutate is one of the reasons we have such an incredible array of grape varieties to choose from. Sweet greengage and brighter citrus notes are to the fore but there's peach and richer tropical flavours lurking in the background to. Light oak ageing has given the wine a creamy edge and a very delicate spice character, without being overtly oaky.
Vina Marro Joven: A vibrant cherry colour, this joven (young, unoaked) wine shows pure varietal fruit character. The colour is an intense red cherry, with a purple rim. The red fruit character is duplicated on the palate, with a wonderful freshness and acidity that provide structure. There is also a nice length to the finish. Would pair very well with cured meats and poultry.
Vina Marro Seleccionada: Fresh red berries with delicate spice and vanilla aromas. accompanied by soft tannins on the palate.
Manzanos Tempranillo Rioja: Classic take on Rioja, round and well-structured with vibrant fresh black and red fruit flavours and spice.
Ontanon Rioja Crianza: Intense black fruit and warm spice, good depth of flavour with some balancing freshness and supple tannins. A very approachable yet classic Crianza.
Senorio de Arana. Vina del Oja Reserva: Matured for 18 months in a new American and French oak cask before spending at least two years in the racks in the cellar. Cherry body with maroon edge. Balsamic notes with spicy tones in the nose. Round and pleasing in the mouth. Reminiscences of minerals.
