{"product_id":"itrleo02","title":"Terre di San Leonardo, Tenuta San Leonardo","description":"\u003cp\u003eTenuta San Leonardo in Trentino has been home to the Guerrieri Gonzaga family for over three centuries, but it is only since the second half of the twentieth century, when Marchese Carlo took over, that this estate began to take wine production seriously. Following a spell spent working at Tenuta San Guido with Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, creator of Sassicaia, he was inspired to see if the clay-limestone soils of his family estate could yield similar results to those achieved by his mentor. In 1978 the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines joined the Merlot and Carmenere that had long been planted and in 1982 the first vintage of the flagship \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.connollyswine.co.uk\/products\/itrleo01\"\u003eSan Leonardo\u003c\/a\u003e was produced, rapidly taking its place in the pantheon of Italy's great wines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vines are located within the ancient walls of the monastery, at 120-300m above sea level, with south-west to north-west exposure. Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenére grow on light, sandy soils, while Merlot is planted on well-drained clay. Vines range from three to twenty-five years old and are trained to cordon, Guyot and Trentino pergola.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpontaneous fermentation and maceration took place for twelve to fifteen days in small concrete vats, with daily pump-overs and occasional delestage. After racking, the wine remained in the same vats for several months. It was then aged for twelve months, with fifty percent in concrete and fifty percent in French oak barriques and tonneaux, before final blending and bottling, followed by at least six months in the cellar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImmediately approachable, this Bordeaux blend melds ripe plum and black cherry fruit flavours with dried herbs and a hint of spice. Silky tannins complement the medium-weight palate whilst the freshness lifts the finish.
