Calandria Joven, Bodegas Belote 2016

SPRBLT01

Tasting Note

Bodegas Belote was created in 2012 by Alberto Viejo who recognised the provenance of the region and the opportunity to bring back to life a small cellar that first made wine in 1947. The cellar is a cave hewn by pick and shovel and the ideal environment for the making of these expressive wines. The winery could be easily missed in the sleepy village of Roales de Campos directly south of Leon. The 2.5 hectares of vineyards are located in the Mayorga de Campos in the south east of the Tierra de Leon denominated area, at an altitude of 900m. The soil type is clay and loam. The variety is Prieto Picudo, fifteen year old vines, and is likened to Alfrocheiro in Portugal. The wines are spontaneously fermented in cement and then aged in French oak. Although not certified, organic practise is employed. Alberto and Emilio are committed to the use of traditional methods and protection of their heritage. These wines reflect their origin and passion for the land. The Belote is the mound under which are the ’caves’ or cellars. Wine has been traditionally made in these caves for many years. The Calandria Joven is an intense cherry color, aromas of ripe red and black fruits on an earthy background. Fresh, lively, attractive and with a mineral character.
